Murrells Inlet

Many home seekers and vacationers alike come to South Carolina for the golf courses. The sheer number of courses throughout the state and particularly along the coast catches the interest of any avid golfer. Some of the more popular courses in the Myrtle Beach area include Grande Dunes, Indigo Creek, Litchfield Country Club, Arcadian Shores and Diamond Back. Both Grande Dunes and Indigo Creek were nominated by Golf Digest for the best new course of 2001. The Grande Dunes course offers six sets of tees and stunning views from bluffs running along the Intracoastal Waterway. Indigo Creek challenges golfers with an array of bunkers, water and doglegs.

Litchfield Country Club and Arcadian Shores are the classics of the area. Opened in 1966 and 1974, respectively, these courses have maintained their original designs over the years. Litchfield was named one of the “World’s 50 Best” by Conde Nast Traveller. Arcadian has been recognized by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. Diamond Back golf course was designed by Russell Breeden and opened in 2000. Surrounded by natural woods, Diamond Back is known to be an addictive challenge of navigation around bunkers and lakes.

For a break from the tees, outdoor enthusiasts will also enjoy the many water sports available in the area. The beaches are popular, though the Southern Strand area beaches can be narrow, particularly at high tide. Fresh and saltwater fishing are available at Huntington Beach State Park. The park is a 2,500-acre site featuring a lagoon, campsites and miles of trails for horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking. The park is also popular with bird watchers and rock climbers.

Wild Water theme park and Legends in Concert are also popular local attractions. In addition to the water slides, the water park facility operates a wave pool, lounge pool, kid pool and other water activities. One can also drive go-carts or play miniature golf on a treasure island-themed course. Legends in Concert puts on a Las Vegas-style show complete with dancers, orchestra and tribute artists, honoring the hottest names in entertainment.

History and nature enthusiasts will enjoy Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet and nearby Georgetown. Brookgreen Gardens, once a successful rice plantation, is now 9,000 acres of wetlands. The site includes a wildlife park with alligators and otters, a bird sanctuary and aviary and picnic areas. Georgetown, about 30 miles south of Surfside Beach, is home to several historical sites, including the Rice Museum and Kaminski House. The museum documents the growth of South Carolina’s rice plantations with maps and artifacts. The Kaminski House is a gorgeous 18th-century home overlooking the Sampit River. While the architecture is striking, Kaminski House is better known for its collection of rare American and English antiques.

As the seafood capital of South Carolina, Murrells Inlet is a wonderful and popular location for enjoying world-class seafood amidst the beautiful scenic coastline.

Myrtle Beach International Airport is a short drive from Murrells Inlet. This large and accommodating airport, along with Myrtle Beach’s state-of-the-art Convention Center and luxury Radisson Hotel, has helped to foster the area’s tourist economy. Broadway at the Beach (in downtown Myrtle Beach) offers area residents and visitors an endless array of shopping, dining, entertainment and attractions. This 350-acre area hosts over 100 specialty shops, 20 restaurants, 10 nightclubs and many attractions, including Ripley’s Aquarium. Also in development in Myrtle Beach is a structure that is to be the largest shopping mall in South Carolina. The existing and expansive Outlet Park at Waccamaw in Myrtle Beach—featuring four factory outlet malls with more than 100 designer brand stores—is a favorite shopping destination for resident shoppers and visitors alike.
